StrongMail Buys PopularMedia

The deal moves the email services company further into social media marketing.

StrongMail Systems Inc., an email marketing services provider, announced Tuesday that it acquired PopularMedia, a San Francisco-based company that provides advertising and marketing services in the social media space.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it gives StrongMail a bigger footprint in the social media marketing—particularly as it applies to marketing campaigns and the ability to track and measure them. The company, according to reports, has raised at least $28 million in VC funding, and PaidContent reports that PopularMedia has raised about $12 million.

"There's no disputing the power of social networks to influence consumer behavior, and StrongMail's acquisition of PopularMedia puts the marketer in a powerful position to fully leverage the potential of social media in a way that is both measureable and fully integrated with their email marketing programs," said Sam Cece, CEO of StrongMail in a statement.

StrongMail's offerings going forward will include specific social media components that allow direct marketers the ability to include a more robust version of the link-sharing and forward-to-a-friend functionality.
