American Media Returns to MPA

Follows Wenner Media rejoining association after two-decade absence.


Score another one for Magazine Publishers of America, which announced today that American Media Inc. has rejoined the association. AMI dropped its membership in August 2008 and was followed by other high profile publishers such as Hachette Filipacchi and New York Media canceling their memberships (New York rejoined last year as well).

"The MPA is an important resource in the publishing industry," said AMI president and chairman David Pecker [pictured] in a statement. "I am glad that AMI can be a contributory voice in all their future efforts."

The move comes after a series of wins for AMI. Last month, the Pulitizer Prize Board named The National Enquirer as one of the candidates for the award for breaking the news about the John Edwards and Tiger Woods scandals. In 2009, AMI avoided bankruptcy through a restructuring that reduced the company's debt by $227.2 million and transferred 95 percent of AMI's common stock to householders. In November, Playboy said it has agreed to farm out the magazine's advertising sales, circulation, marketing, production and all other business operations to AMI.

In February, Wenner Media announced it would rejoin MPA after dropping out for two decades.
